Remember that time I told my parents that my trip to Belgium was a program-sponsored trip that I was taking with friends as opposed to a one-woman adventure that found me sleeping on a stranger’s couch in a foreign country where I didn’t speak the language? Yeah…I remember that.

So I really didn’t mean to lie. But when all your friends are going to Amsterdam and your cheapest option is to fly to Belgium first, you take it. Even if it means traveling alone for 24 hours and exploring a strange city on your own. Which, in the end, ended up being one of the most humbling and empowering experiences of my life. So sorry, Mom and Dad, but I’m chalking this one up as a good decision.
