I think I’ve cracked the secret to enjoying budget travel. If you lower your expectations and have no pre-conceived ideas about what should happen – you can be sure that nothing will disappoint.

If you’re paying $3-$5 a night for accommodation you should probably know that this can often include a shared pit toilet and a bucket shower (which means a waist height tap with cold water). Don’t assume that linen, toilet paper, or soap are part of the standard issue – you’re paying for a roof and a place to sleep. Everything else is BYO.

If you want to pay twenty cents for a meal expect to eat for the sole purpose of sustenance and not for a culinary experience. Prepare your stomach (and your toilet) for the possibility of consequences and remember, that it only takes one bad piece of meat to result in the consumption of sixteen…
